According to the FBI, “a person with the technical skills to exploit a water meter can gain unauthorized access to the water supply and control the flow of water, which could potentially harm customers and even kill the meter.”

In 2018, a water meters owner named Daniel B. was also able to change his water meter’s password, according the Verge, as seen by the video below.

The FBI also revealed that Met Galaghas 2017 security was not as strong as it could have been.
The water meter also had a vulnerability, which allowed hackers to log in to the meter and steal credentials.
According the FBI report, “it was possible to gain unauthorized control of a water supply device through the use of a device known as a ‘water meter device.’
A ‘water device’ is a computer-controlled water meter that includes a water tank and an outlet, or an open circuit circuit.
The device also includes a keypad, a remote control, and a battery pack that allows the device to automatically adjust the water flow.
